Straight answers.
Including the awkward ones. If something here is a dealbreaker, we'd rather you knew now than after we'd installed it.
The basics
What is ioNivelo?
A retrofit module that fits behind the switchboard you already have. It gives you app control of up to four channels, typically three lights and a ceiling fan, without replacing your switches or rewiring anything.
Do I need an electrician?
We send a trained installer, and they do the whole job. This is live 230 V wiring inside your switchboard, so it is not a DIY product and we won't pretend otherwise. What you don't need is a rewiring job: nothing is chased into walls and nothing gets repainted.
Will my switchboard work?
Most modular boards do. The one thing to check is the switches themselves: conventional toggle switches are the fit. Push-button (momentary) switches would double-toggle, so we swap those during the install. We confirm all of this during the survey before you commit to anything.
How long does the install take?
About an hour per switchboard. We fit the module, name your channels in the app, and match the fan speeds to your actual fan before we leave.
Living with it
Do my wall switches still work?
Yes, and they keep working with no Wi-Fi, no internet and no cloud, because that path is hardwired. The switch and the app stay in sync in both directions. One quirk worth knowing: the switch can't physically move on its own, so whatever position it's resting in, the next flip toggles.
What happens when the internet goes down?
If you're at home, almost nothing changes: your broadband being down doesn't take your router down, and the app talks to the device directly over your own Wi-Fi at full speed. Schedules keep firing because they run on the device's own clock. If you're out of the house, you lose remote control entirely until the connection is back. We're not going to pretend otherwise.
Is there a catch to the offline control?
One, and it's worth knowing: the app can't cold-start with the internet down. If it's already open, local control keeps working. If you'd force-closed it, you're back to the wall switch, which is exactly where you'd be without us, and it works.
How fast is it when I'm away from home?
It's a check-in, not a push. The device asks for new instructions every 15 seconds, so usually you'll wait under ten seconds and worst case about twenty. At home on your Wi-Fi it's under a second. The app shows “Turning on…” until the device itself confirms, and tells you plainly if it never hears back.
Fan, schedules and sensors
How many fan speeds do I get?
Three, four or five, depending on how your fan and regulator are wired. The device reports what it supports and the app shows exactly that. The speed is remembered separately from on/off, so turning the fan off and on again brings it back at the same speed, including after a power cut.
Does fan speed work on every unit?
No. It needs the speed relays wired into your fan's live wire, and it's supported on our ESP32 units only. We confirm what your fan supports during the survey rather than promising it up front.
How do schedules work?
They run on the device itself against its own clock, so they keep firing with the internet down. You can set one-off, repeating and date-window timers, up to ten per device. Creating or editing one needs a connection, and after editing you tap “Sync to device” to push the change, and it doesn't take effect until you do.
Can I see temperature history?
Not yet. ESP32 units can carry an optional temperature and humidity sensor and the app shows the current reading, but there are no history charts or trends. That's on the list, not in the product.
The app, updates and support
Where do I get the app?
From us, at install time. There's no App Store or Play Store listing yet, so we put it on your phone when we fit the unit and keep it updated for you until the listing is live.
How do firmware updates work?
We push them over the air to ESP32 units. Each update is checked against a SHA-256 hash before it's used, and if a new version can't reach our servers after installing, the device puts itself back on the previous one. Two honest limits: our ESP8266 units update by cable, not over the air, and an update that won't boot at all needs a visit. Updates are something we run for you, and there's no update button in the app.
Can I add my family to the app?
Not from the app yet. The accounts system supports multiple people per home, but the invite screen isn't built, so for now we can add someone for you. It's one of the first things we're finishing.
How secure is it?
All cloud traffic uses TLS, the app can only ever see homes you're a member of, and on your own Wi-Fi commands don't leave the house at all. We'll also be straight with you about where we're still improving: right now each unit's Wi-Fi credentials are written into its firmware, and per-device credentials are work in progress rather than done.
Which cities do you cover?
A small number, because every install is a physical visit. Send us your area and we'll tell you honestly whether we can reach you yet.
